South Park was off-air for the summer, and during that period the show missed out on a lot of big events. But the series has been catching up since its return. Last week, the series took aim at the summer's biggest movie. This week, the show pulls up another slightly old news item and spoofs the BP oil spill.
The story involves Cartman and his band of wannabe superheroes. There's Token as "Tupperware", Butters again appears as Professor Chaos, and Stan is "Toolshed". One scene had great comedic value when the Coon and friends bickering turns into a brutal beating of the mosquito in a surprising homage to a scene in "A Clockwork Orange". Cartman's insidious plan against Captain Hindsight eventually gets enacted, and Butters spends a wild night dressed as Courtney Love.
A "real" superhero shows up, Captain Hindsight, who has powers of stating the obvious after the fact. Captain Hindsight shows up and provides useless information. Perhaps he is a metaphor for all the pundits who had "expert" opinions on the spill and what BP should have done to prevent it. There are a number of nice moments when the story keeps to effects of all the drilling (the Louisiana shrimp guy's accent was helarious). The commercials with the BP CEO apologizing are amusing too, and the company name change to DP was brilliant.
The last few minutes of the episode really hold most of the laughs. A quick shot of the moon shows the dead killer whale and Tom Cruise, a nice self-referential gag for the show. Cthulhu being released by BP's drilling on the moon is a nice, nerdy touch, and the final shot of a ruminating Coon plotting his vengeance against his former team mates promises to make things interesting in the future.
