1. Peter Crouch
TV star James Corden was a big fan of the robot, and during Comic Relief, gave the striker some tips of how he could improve it. One of them – the rope – was performed by Crouch following his goal against Ukraine.

2. Eric Cantona
Known for the understatement of his celebrations, Cantona reacted to his sublime chip against Sunderland in the 1996-97 season with the blank, inscrutable expression of a player who knew he was at the top of his game.

3. Craig Bellamy
Bellamy found himself in a storm before Liverpool's match at Barcelona after chasing team-mate John Arne Riise with a golf club. Bookmakers offered 100-1 that the Welshman would mark any goal with a swing, and Bellamy delivered.

4. Jurgen Klinsmann
Having arrived at Spurs with a reputation for diving, Klinsmann showed why on his debut against Sheffield Wednesday, scoring a stunning header and promptly running to fans for a dive to remember. One soon copied in schools everywhere.

5. Marco Tardelli
The indelible image of the Italian's strike in the 1982 World Cup final is eclipsed only by that of his response, as he ran off screaming his own name like a child, caught in the ecstasy of the moment.
